     OBEDIENCE AGILITY
Obedience – A police canine’s obedience is very similar to that of pet dogs.  Canines have to know how to heel, make left and right turns while heeling, sit, down, stay and recall.  The areas where police canines differ is the canines are expected to do obedience in a variety of situations and environmental conditions.  Police canines train in tactical obedience as well.  In tactical obedience the handler will practice a variety of shooting stances on the move or stationary.  The canine is taught to automatically go into a down position as the officer’s handgun is drawn.  Hand signals are also used so the movements of the canine may be made without noise or verbal command.  Handlers spend countless hours working on obedience with the canines.  Obedience is the basic fundamental behavior police canines must have in order to perform the job.

Agility – Police canines practice agility to assure they will be able and ready for challenges they may encounter while at work.  The dogs are trained to jump over three foot chain link fences, six foot walls, jump through open windows, walk through tunnels, walking over a teeter-totter and go underneath different objects.  They are always rewarded for their efforts with their favorite toy.

Most of the obstacles we train with are obstructions the K9 would face on a daily basis.
